Fanfare to the Open Air was commissioned by the Franco Committee of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America for the 2020 Congress, Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, PA. Upon cancellation of the congress due to covid-19, the premiere of the piece was saved for the University of Chicago congress in 2022. The unique scoring of trumpet and carillon explores the combination of brass timbres with an instrument traditionally used as a solo instrument. The opening rhythm of the trumpet heralds the outdoor space bringing together these majestic instruments. The melodic middle section contrasts the declamatory opening with a lyrical conversation between the trumpet and carillon. With the return of the opening, the carillon responds with more bravura textures contrasting the trumpet regalia.
