Figments contains a number of quotations from the twenty-fourth fugue of the first volume of The Well-Tempered Clavier by J. S. Bach. These materials are indicated by small brackets: ⌜ ⌝ in the score. The intended effect is that these lines "float to the surface" of the textures much as memories come up unexpectedly in a dream. It is important that the performer adopt a rubato style, particularly for the quoted materials.
