Five Fancies was the prize-winning piece of the 2002 Iowa State University Carillon Composition Competition. Each movement gives brief development to aphoristic gestures. The opening movement consists of slow, floating melodies with sharp interruptions. The second movement features angular waves of scales that burst out into octaves and runs of sevenths. This gives way to a broken waltz that starts out in 5/4, transforming some of the motives of the previous movement into a plaintive melody. The fourth movement is an octatonic toccata, a stark contrast with the quiet reverie of the last movement. These pieces work well as a set or may be excerpted as the performer wishes.
