Modal Noctume is a beautiful example of the adaptation of French impressionistic idioms to a fully idiomatic carillon piece. The principal melody (the "A" section in the ABA form) is written in the mixolydian mode (a white-key scale beginning on "G", rather than "C"). The "B" section, in 6/8 time, is more chromatic, moving through a variety of key areas, developing its material as it goes. It was premiéred by D'hollander at the 1998 congress of the GCNA at the University of California, Berkeley.
