1st prize, 2019 Franco Composition Contest
The title expresses how the piece came about. Initially I composed a song with chords. That song became the 'Amoroso' part in the composition.
Motives from the Amoroso could spread out in the corner parts of the composition and went on to lead their own lives. This is reminiscent of pollinating flowers by butterflies. During composing I asked myself how a song could evolve into a dance. As imagery I thought about the metamorphosis from caterpillar (song) to butterfly (dance). The selected time signature 7/8 has simplified that composition process.
The composition A Butterfly's Dance is composed of a song and a dance and the interaction between the two of them.
Symbolically, in many cultures, the butterfly stands for luck and prosperity.
I started composing this piece because I got married on September 10, 2018, and wanted to express this through the composition A Butterfly's Dance.
The butterfly, in some cultures, stands for rebirth. In that case one might think that your 'hard drive' (your personal life before marriage) would be erased. In the composition I see that the hard disk is not erased but that thoughts, experiences, and principles start to get different places and meanings in your life after marriage.
