The dissonant melodic line in the first few measures, followed by a pure angelic call – "Laudem Dei" – in the four-note high B motif came to me early one morning in May 2020 as a response to the descent into fear and chaos that the Covid-19 pandemic was creating in the world. The rest of the piece flowed quickly onto the score as the musical ideas alternated between the pain of reality and praise to the Creator. Ultimately, this tension is resolved and we are lifted out of the depths of despair by a sense of harmony and peace that transcends all understanding.
