I composed Momentum immediately after my first-ever carillon lesson, inspired by the novel performance techniques and patterns I heard from music my teacher played for me as examples of typical carillon repertoire. I found it fascinating how unique carillon was in comparison to other instruments I was more intimately familiar with, and I desired to compose something that—at least at the time—I expected would be rather idiomatic. It took me over a year to be able to perform it myself, but through it I hope to convey my electric and unyielding passion for carillon—highlighting both the endurance required to play such a physical instrument, as well as the musical possibilities best expressed with bells.
