The gentle ebb and flow of the waves, represented by the rising and falling arpeggios in the hands, creates a peaceful background for the lightly melancholic musings of a person resting on the seashore.

In the middle section, the sea—and the mind—shows some of its other colors, sometimes light and playful, sometimes distressed and dark. As the storm calms down, the serene, reflective mood returns at the end of the piece.
