In the second year of my undergraduate studies, I had the opportunity to study biochemistry as a visiting student at St Anne's College at the University of Oxford. The college campus is a patchwork quilt of charming Victorian houses, a sleek modern library, and striking brutalist buildings broken up by grassy lawns. There was a small, secluded garden that I liked to escape to when I needed a break from studying. Sometimes, if I was lucky, I would be able to hear the syncopated ringing of distant bells from the University Church of St Mary the Virgin. St Anne's Garden in a Fading Summer captures the serenity of sitting in this garden in the crisp, cool September air. Rapid thirty-second note passages in the middle represent gentle rainfall. As the rain subsides, the syncopated melody of the church bells can be heard.
