Variations on a Copenhagen Chime was written in Ann Arbor, in response to a challenge from Percival Price to write a piece for a two-octave carillon. It is based on a clock chime tune Myhre had heard (and notated) on the city hall clock in Copenhagen, Denmark. He notated it with the lowest note of the two-octave range as "middle c." To play it on a two-octave carillon, it would be played an octave lower than written. On a larger carillon of concert pitch or lower, playing this version as notated may be more effective. Myhre also wrote the piece out in a lower key, to accommodate carillons with a more limited pedalboard range (only up to "g"). (This version also happens to fit 2.5-octave carillons well.) In all cases the pitch and keyboard of the carillon at hand should dictate which version is used.
