everything that rises must converge was commissioned by the Department of Alumni Relations to commemorate the centenary of Armistice Day, and was premiered at the Annual Service of Remembrance on November 9, 2018. The title of the piece comes from a quotation from Tielhard de Chardin's The Future of Man (1964). De Chardin philosophised about the complexity of the universe and where it was headed. He writes about divergent perspectives and beliefs, and how, in time, "followed to their conclusion the two paths must certainly end by coming together: for in the nature of things everything that is faith must rise, and everything that rises must converge." This quote challenges us to reflect on past conflicts and the developments over the past century, considering the developments that followed thereafter while seeking hope for the future.
