Program notes

Peace, Extending was commissioned for 2-octave carillon by The Guild of Carillonneurs in North America for performance on the Yale Memorial Carillon at the GCNA's Congress at Yale University in June 2026.

Peace, Extending was composed in the winter of 2025–26 in response to the U.S. government's Operation Metro Surge, the shockingly disruptive and violent immigration enforcement action carried out by the U.S. government in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As much as I have been angered and saddened over the course of these past months by the unthinkable treatment of human beings and the unlawful disregard for individual rights, I have also been deeply moved by the peaceful, generous and compassionate response of neighborhood communities in Minneapolis as they care for and protect vulnerable neighbors and friends.

The people of Minneapolis have been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize by the American weekly magazine The Nation. From The Nation's nomination statement to the Norwegian Nobel Committee:

Through countless acts of courage and solidarity, the people of Minneapolis have challenged the culture of fear, hate, and brutality that has gripped the United States and too many other countries. Their nonviolent resistance has captured the imagination of the nation and the world... The people of Minneapolis and their elected leaders have demonstrated an extraordinary and sustained commitment to human dignity and to the protection of vulnerable communities. They have exemplified the desire for democracy and equality and the celebration of difference. The moral leadership of the people and city of Minneapolis has set an example for those struggling against fascism everywhere on the face of a troubled planet, and this, we believe, merits recognition through the award of the Nobel Peace Prize.

With Peace, Extending, I honor the courageous people of Minneapolis for their strong, nonviolent and constructive response to this ongoing crisis. As of this writing, the U.S. government's presence in Minneapolis continues.

Performance notes

Where dotted barlines are used, the timing is flexible. In these sections, the meter and tempo should be thought of as guidelines rather than strict directions.

Noteheads in boxes (middle staff):

The middle staff (reduced in size) shows specific notes in boxes to be played in any order, freely, as rhythmically-improvised material lasting the duration of the wavy line extending from the box. These constantly moving clouds of pitches serve in the background as support to the foreground melodies in the top and bottom staves. As needed, these improvised textures in the middle staff should give way to the more prominent notated music in the upper and lower staves.

n = niente
