"Swipesy" is an early ragtime composition published in 1900 by Scott Joplin and his protégé Arthur Marshall. Although it is labeled a cakewalk, it conforms more to the ragtime idiom, most notably in the C section (the trio), where Joplin is thought to have made the greatest contribution. Marshall and Joplin came up with the piece's title after witnessing a fight between two newspaper boys, according to later accounts by Marshall and his daughter.
