Metropolitan United Church in Toronto, Canada, was the first well-tuned carillon in North America when the instrument of 23 bells was installed in 1922. Additional bells were later added: 12 midrange bells in 1960, and 19 trebles in 1971, bringing the total to 54. A major renovation from 2019 to 2022 by Meeks, Watson & Company included new clappers, a new keyboard, and retuning of the 1960 bells. The renovation also repositioned the upper 26 bells and changed the instrument's transposition, to extend the clavier range to include a low B♭ in the pedals.
F. Percival Price, Metropolitan's first carillonneur, composed a theme (reproduced below) shortly after the carillon was dedicated in 1922. A century later, Scott Allan Orr, Toronto-born carillonneur/composer, composed these Variations on Price's Theme for the 'McGill Square Bells' (McGill Square is the urban green space and city block on which Metropolitan United is located.). This commission was in honour of the centenary of the carillon and premiered during the rededication of the carillon in October 2022 following the aforementioned major renovation.
Price's Theme for McGill Square Bells was included as the frontispiece of the Anthology of North American Carillon Compositions, Vol. 1, 1922–1941, published by the GCNA in 1992.
